# Measuring a campaign on the shop floor, not only at the till

During Black Friday and other sale periods, sales tell you what sold. How to see what shoppers picked up, compared and put back, and how to read those numbers when traffic changes.

## The approach

**Measure product interaction before, during and after the campaign, per product and store, and compare rates rather than totals.** Traffic rises in a campaign, so almost every count goes up. The share of pickups that are put back, and which products are compared, say more than the totals.

## Step by step

1. **Choose the products and fixtures**: The campaign products, and the products they compete with, on fixtures the cameras see clearly.
2. **Record a baseline**: A normal period before the campaign, with the same products in the same places.
3. **Keep the setup still**: Avoid moving products or fixtures during the campaign, unless the move is what you are testing.
4. **Follow it daily**: Pickups, hold time and put-backs per product and store while the campaign runs.
5. **Compare afterwards**: A period after the campaign ends, to see what interest stayed.

## What to look at

| Signal | What it tells you in a campaign |
|---|---|
| Pickups per product | Which campaign products draw hands, and which are ignored despite the discount |
| Put-back rate | A discounted product that still goes back often: something other than the price may be stopping the decision |
| Products compared together | What shoppers weigh the campaign product against |
| Never-touched products | Campaign stock that is not being noticed: placement and signage to check |
| Screen content, if you have screens | Which campaign content goes with longer holds |

## Reading the numbers

- **Rates over counts.** Busier days raise every count; compare shares and per-product rates.
- **Store by store.** A campaign can land in one store and not in another.
- **With your sales data.** GoTrack does not read POS data; join its exports with your sales to relate interest to purchases.
- **A change, not a cause.** A before-and-after shows what changed; it does not prove the campaign caused it.

## Questions

### Can GoTrack tell marketing which products are examined, and for how long?

Yes. It reports pickups per product and variant, average hold time, put-back rate, products compared together and never-touched products. It measures how long a product is held, not how long someone stands in front of it.

### Do we need screens to use GoTrack?

No. GoTrack's product analytics works with cameras alone. Screens are optional: add them when you want the shelf to react to the product in hand.

### Can GoTrack show whether sales went up?

Not on its own. GoTrack measures what happens at the shelf — pickups, hold time and put-backs — and does not read POS data. To relate interest to sales, join GoTrack's CSV exports or webhook events with your own sales data.

### Can we test a new product placement with GoTrack?

Yes, as a before-and-after comparison: move a product to a new shelf zone or fixture and compare its pickups, hold time and put-backs with the period before. GoTrack shows the change; it does not run statistical tests for you.
