Products compared together: what shoppers weigh against each other

When a shopper picks up one product and then another, they are comparing. Those pairs show which products compete, which belong side by side and what a screen could show next.

Definition

Products compared together are products picked up one after the other by the same shopper. GoTrack counts these pairs per store without identifying anyone. Frequent pairs are the alternatives shoppers really weigh, which is not always what the category plan assumes.

What the pairs tell you

PatternWhat to consider
Two colours of one modelShoppers choose between colours: keep them side by side
Two models at different pricesA price comparison: see which one goes back more often
Products from different areasA link the layout does not show yet: consider placing them closer
A pair where both go backNeither won: something is missing between them

Where to use it

  • Placement: put frequently compared products where the comparison is easy.
  • Screens: when two products are held together, GoTrack shows both on the screen, side by side.
  • Range review: a product never compared with anything may lack a clear alternative, or a clear place in the range.
  • Pairings: pairs from different categories suggest what to show together.

Limits

  • Pairs are counted, people are not. No shopper is identified or recognised on a later visit.
  • Enough pickups first. A pair seen a handful of times is an anecdote, not a pattern.

Questions

Can GoTrack tell marketing which products are examined, and for how long?

Yes. It reports pickups per product and variant, average hold time, put-back rate, products compared together and never-touched products. It measures how long a product is held, not how long someone stands in front of it.

How do GoTrack screens decide what to show?

When a shopper holds a product, the screen linked to that area shows that product's content, and keeps showing it while the product is held. When no one is holding anything, the screen plays its playlist. The screens do not need to be touchscreens.

Which products does GoTrack work best with?

Garments on racks and shelves, and shoe walls — products a shopper picks up to look at. A garment's size is not read from the image.
